School lunches boost children's health, according to
study
A study by Iowa State researchers confirmed that the
National School Lunch Program (NSLP) improves the health outcomes of
children who reside in low-income households. The study of nearly 2,700
NSLP children (ages 6-17) found that the NSLP reduces the prevalence of
food insecurity by 3.8 percent, poor general health by 29 percent, and
the rate of obesity by at least 17 percent in its participants.

Breakfast & Lunch Prices
School Lunch Fund
The SCS School Lunch Program strongly encourages
parents to make payments to your child’s account by the week or month,
in the form of a check if possible, as that is the easiest way to keep
track of balances. Checks can be made payable to SCS School Lunch Fund.
For elementary students please remember to put payments in an envelope
labeled with your child’s full name (and names of any siblings that are
to receive account payments) and teacher’s name.
Meal Charging Policy
Students that have “debits” or negative balance in their account are not
permitted to purchase snacks (e.g., ice cream, chips, etc.). Also,
students may “charge” or debit the POS up to $9.00. Then parents will be
contacted, and students will be offered a peanut butter sandwich and
milk until the charges/debits are paid. Thank you for your continued support of the SCS
School Lunch/Breakfast Program!
School Lunch/Breakfast Account Status Receipts
Since we have started the new Point of Sale (POS)
cash register system there have been many inquiries about student’s
account balances. Therefore, we have begun printing a cash register
receipt for students putting money in their account, and for students
with debits or negative account balance.
These receipts are given to students when the
transaction is made and contain the account balance. If the receipt has
“Balance CR,” that means credit, and the student has a positive balance
in their account, if the receipt has “Balance DB,” that means debit, and
the student has a negative balance (or “charges) on their account.
Parents should contact
Josie Ennist, School Lunch Manager, at 295-6618 if they see any
discrepancies with the reported balance, or wish to check on an account
balance. The POS system maintains a transaction report for each student
and this report can be provided to parents if there are any questions
regarding a students account.

"Choose Sensibly" Snacks Hit
Elementary and Jr./Sr. High School Cafeterias
The words “Choose Sensibly” along with a yellow logo are popping up in
both the Elementary and Jr/Sr High School Cafeterias. Those words and
that logo identify a snack item that fits within the guidelines set by
the New York State School Nutrition Association’s “Choose Sensibly”
campaign. This is a program that endeavors to improve the nutritional
quality of the snacks our children are selecting.
According to these guidelines a sensible snack will have:
The standards for beverages are:
-
Low-fat milk and low-fat flavored milk
-
Juice with 25% or more fruit juice
-
Water or flavored water without added sugar,
artificial sweeteners or caffeine
-
Beverages with 10 milligrams or less caffeine
per serving
Schoharie Central School Lunch Program began to implement this program
last year and for this school year will have many new "Choose Sensibly"
snacks available for ala carte sales during lunch.
This year students
will find the "Choose Sensibly" logo on items like baked chips, fresh
fruit, bottled water, peanut butter crackers, rice cakes, granola bars
and small sized Little Debbie cookies. "Choose Sensibly" Ice cream
products so far include Minute Maid Juice Bars, Fudgesicles, Creamscicles,
and Scribblers. The School Lunch Program continues to search for other
snack items children enjoy that meet the "Choose Sensibly" guidelines.
The "Choose Sensibly" campaign was designed to
encourage and motivate students to buy single serve snacks that meet the
"Choose Sensibly" nutritional profile, rather than those that contain
higher grams of fat, sugar and sodium and contain more than one serving
per container. For additional information about this campaign or
information about the school lunch/breakfast program contact
Josie Ennist, School Lunch Manager, at 295-6618.
