Reading, writing and a relaxed atmosphere
Reading, writing and keeping skills sharp in a
relaxed and fun atmosphere await several dozen third though sixth
graders at Summer Literacy Camp, which will be held August 8-26 at
Schoharie Elementary School. Funded by a State Education Department
grant, the camp is provided at no cost to parents in the district and
will be held Monday through Friday mornings.
“The goal of Summer Literacy Camp is to strengthen
and maintain reading comprehension, writing and other literacy skills
that students have learned during the year,” Schoharie Elementary
Principal Maryellen Gillis said. “Teachers recommended students for the
camp, and we sent letters to their parents and guardians inviting them
to participate.”
Gillis noted that parents or guardians must provide
transportation for their children to the camp, which is coordinated by
Schoharie Literacy Specialist Adriene Bush. Literacy campers take part
in writing projects, use computer-aided instruction and play skill
development games in a less formal learning environment.
“We’ve had a very positive reaction from parents,
who see their children’s skills strengthened during the three-week
camp,” Gillis said, “The students enjoy working in smaller groups,
having more one-to-one attention, and learning in a more peaceful
setting as compared to the regular school year. They also like getting
to know our teachers.”
Parents and guardians with questions about the camp
may call or email the
Elementary School office.
